Hell Hole Gorge

 Hell Hole Gorge is a National Park in South West Queensland. The Hell Hole itself for which the park is named is at the junction of Powell and Spencer Creeks.  There is another waterhole which can be explored up Spencer Creek - Spencers Waterhole which is accessible via 4WD off the main track into Hell Hole Gorge.  The Gorge is around 70kms north of Adavale - follow the signs as Google Maps is a bit misleading out this way on what is gazetted roads and station roads aren't exactly clear.  The way to get to Windorah is back via Adavale and out to Quilpie - though if you lived locally and new the station owners there may be alternative routes.

The National Parks have stopped camping on the other side of Powell Creek these days whereas there were tracks across the stone bottomed creek to some sites overlooking the gorge when we stopped through here in 2020.

The flies....were bad....very bad.  All this rain seemed to increase the fly population exponentially.  Our bee veils came in very handy as these flies had no respect for personal space!

  I use a drone for landscape images where I can't get the image I am looking for from my land based camera setup.  I cater for the small sensor by stacking images and building HDR and HDR Panorama images from raw images in Adobe Camera Raw.  It is surprising how good the images can turn out - just need to follow the golden rule of no cropping so get your image right before you take the shot. I went to grab my old DJI Mavic Mini Air which is in great working order and was very surprised to find out that the drone is no longer supported by DJI and none of their software works on my phone so I couldn't fly the drone.  I did pay and download a third party product which still allowed me to fly the drone but with a big trip coming up, I decided to go down the forced upgrade path. Day 3 - Betoota to Birdsville

It is just a short jump from Betoota to Birdsville, though we took off early as we wanted plenty of time to relax and finalise our trip preparation for our Simpson Desert crossing. The road was rough and corrugated and the mounded gravel banks kept you focussed.  The graders were working on the road for the return trip but my tyres took a pounding along this stretch.  I had aired down to around 20 psi to smooth the ride out, but the sidewalls ended up with some good sized nicks that concerned us given we had around 7000kms still to go in some very remote country. Day 4 - Birdsville to Lake Thomas (Part 1 - Birdsville to Eyre Creek)

 So where is Lake Thomas?  It's the first salt lake after Lake Poeppel on the French Line! Today was a big day out in the desert and a long day of driving.  The day started with packing the vehicles, ensuring the weight distribution was right as this is the heaviest load on the Jimny and the biggest dunes.  We are getting lighter every kilometer we travel. Tyre pressures are key for sand driving and whilst the dunes are apparently steeper on approach heading from East to West through the desert, the Jimny handled them all even with the overloading - with carrying an additional 60+kgs in fuel (3x20l Jerries) plus 40l in the tank. So in talking tyre pressures, my go to pressure is 11 PSI for most sand driving.  This might seem low but we are talking about a vehicle that has recommended tyre pressures of 23 PSI in the front and 25 PSI in the rear.  As we were fully loaded - I increased the pressure to around 13 PSI cold for the desert crossing.  I have gone down to 8 PSI when I do Nor
